Diversity Event- abUSed

I went to the diversity event about the film called abUSed by Luis Argueta. This is a film about the Postville Raid on the towns meat packing plant. I chose to go to this event because in my hometown there is a meat packing plant that employes many imigrants. I thought this would be very interesting to watch. In fact it was very interesting and it makes you stop and think what if this were to happen to my town. What would people be saying and what would they think?

The film showed what excatly happend and how the people felt. Things that seemed very shocking to me were that the workers were sent to the National Cattle Congress and were processed through an assembly line of government workers trying to evict them and send them back to where they came from. This is awful that the workers were treated like the cattle or other animals that they worked with everyday. Children were seperated from their parents and only some mothers were able to go back and care for their children. However, they were forced to wear ankle detectors that would not allow them to go outside of the state or even their town. The mothers had to charge their ankle devices for two hours a day so this meant this was time away from their children.

Another thing that surprised me was that the government found that thirty one of the workers were sexualy assulted during work and eleven of the workers were working underage. At the end of all of this it turned out that the manager of the meat packing plant was charged with twenty seven years in jail for eighty seven acounts of working a minor.

I really got my eyes opened up to what the world can really be like and how exactly imigrants can be treated. I don't know honestly how my town would act if this would happen to our local meat packing plant Tyson. I just know that my hometown would be really dead because nobody would be there. I really believe that everyone needs to watch the video abUSed to get a view of what can happen to a meat packing plant even though it may just be in Iowa.

  1. That is really interesting! I went to the NWC one but it would have been nice to go to that one as well. Sounds kind of interesting.

  2. That is insane I don't live anywhere near a meat packing plant but that would be just creepy going from a thriving place to a ghost town.

  3. I live in a town not too far from Postville. I know that because of this raid, a lot of producers in my area have to pay extra trucking fees to ship their beef out of state. Just goes to show how something like this has an effect on us ordinary people, and we don't even necessarily live in the town in which it occurs!

  4. Sounds pretty interesting. Kind of a bummer how this event had such a long term effect on the area.
